If you were too young in 2003 here is what Bush told the American people:

1) The Iraq War won’t cost a lot of money
3) We won’t need a lot of troops
4) We’ll bring peace and freedom to Iraq
5) We’ll find WMDs
6) We’ll be welcomed as liberators
7) It will be easy
8) It won’t take long

All lies.

Book review: Sigrid Nunez’s What Are You Going Through: 5 stars. Touchingly human, tender, smart, funny and kind without an ounce of sappiness. Masterful.

News from travels: if you accidentally put balsamic vinegar in a noodle salad thinking it was soy sauce, don’t eat it. They are not interchangeable. Lesson learned.

Book review: Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery. Worth the read. Looking forward to reading more by this author as she dives deep into trying to understand animal consciousness.

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”

A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

Book review: Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett. Actually, not a review yet. I’m still thinking about it. Brilliant characters, fantastic narration but disappointed by the ending. Too much “happily ever after” an abrupt change from his thoughtful and compassionate treatment of depression and suicide.

No other presidential candidate was pressed to do what MVP did: re-introduce herself & run a campaign in 3 months and getting 75 mil votes in 107 days.

This Presidents' Day, I'm honoring Kamala Harris for rising to the occsasion and saving Dem seats along the way.

This was America's loss.

Book review: The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhorn. Thank you to Ilaiane Lorenz for the recommendation. Based on a real midwife in Maine in the late 1700’s. Birth, death, murder, family, and a whole lot of snow and ice. A great thread pulls you through with a couple you can’t help but admire and adore.

Book review of North to Home by Crissi McDonald. I’m obsessed with orca, so I had buy in from the cover. About 60 pages in, I saw a romance story coming but I adored the setting in the San Juan Islands so I stayed. And boy am... https://joelldunlap.micro.blog/2025/02/12/book-review-of-north-to.html

Book Review: Never Burn Your Moving Boxes by Jolyn Young. I liked the author’s honesty and her determination. I can easily picture the landscape and the people. Nice to hear an authentic voice that is simple and bold.

Book review: Yellowface by R.F. Kuang The author covers a lot of territory about cancel culture, the publishing business, etc. In the end, it’s an entertaining book with a lot to say. A good choice for a book club discussion as different people will have completely different takes.
