This is excellent media framing: a catchy phrase which happens to be true.
Jeffries: "The Trump administration and Mike Johnson are running a pedophile protection program. That's the reason they refuse to swear in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva."

My grand unifying theory of politics is: "The winner of the presidential general election is the candidate who would win a race for Prom King." The only time it failed in the last 50+ years was 2020, when there was a defining issue people voted on. It is the maddening civic reality we live in.

This needs to be duplicated EVERYWHERE! They will rue the day this guy was detained: "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."
Okay this made me laugh very hard. Bravo and more please. www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

Birders and those who appreciate goofy road trips should watch the free YouTube movie "Listers" about a pair of brothers who decide to do a Big Year without first knowing anything about birds. Here is an interview with the pair: www.audubon.org/magazine/get...

This post was originally from after Colbert was cancelled, and now with Kimmel on the outs it is abundantly clear we do not have a free society.
Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.

This was, of course, extremely predictable. It isn't "only one man responsible" though - rural America overwhelmingly voted for this: they are responsible for the outcome of that vote.
American soybean farmers don’t have a single order from China as they head into harvest season. China usually buys 25% of the entire crop.

Crisis looms for the farmers and there’s only one man responsible.
Farmer says 'we're in a very dire situation' ahead of harvest—with zero soybean orders from China, historically the largest buyer | Fortune
Caleb Ragland says his pleas to the Trump administration have fallen on deaf ears.

Apparently inaccurate weather forecasts can have deadly consequences. What a coincidence that a bunch of weather forecasters at the National Weather Service were randomly fired a few months ago.
After media reports & experts warned for months that drastic & sudden cuts at the Nat Weather Service by Trump could impair their forecasting ability & endanger lives during the storm season, TX officials blame an inaccurate forecast by NWS for the deadly results of the flood.

It is very important to repeat the point that higher government debt leads to higher interest rates for everyone's mortgage and car loan. If rank and file people knew this they would be demanding to tax the crap out of the billionaires to bring down the deficit.
It's a very, very good point. The earlier crises were vast and required huge amounts of spending. We have no economic crisis now. We have a vast political and constitutional one. It's when you'd want to keep deficit/debt stable with respect to size of the economy.
Of all the times in our history, why blow out the budget deficit now?

Jeffries: "We will not be lectured by Donald Trump and anyone in the Republican Party about issues of law and order ... he pardoned hundreds of violent felons, criminals, who brutally assaulted police officers and attacked the Capitol on January 6. That's what Donald Trump did on day one."

Question I would like asked at a White House press conference: "Does anyone in the administration feel bad about sending innocent people to be tortured indefinitely in a Salvadoran prison, or is every last one of you an evil sociopath?"

Now the decisive test is whether our society can learn from its mistakes. That is the frayed thread on which the remnants of our democracy hang. I can't say I have faith in the outcome, but I will do what I can to make it so.
The decisive test of our society in my lifetime was the 2024 election and our failure was spectacular and total. I will never again have any faith in the American electorate to do the obviously right thing.

I was angry about the Senate Democrats' capitulation on the continuing resolution keeping the government running for 6 months, but this is a reasonable argument that it will end up being the politically astute thing for Democrats to have done. Time will tell.

Democrats have had a problem with geriatric leadership out of touch with the Democratic base and the people in general for a while. Pelosi gracefully stepped aside, and Biden less gracefully. After his "please shred the Constitution more slowly" show, it is clear Schumer must also step aside.

Your kakistocracy for today: Trump claimed that Biden spent money "making mice transgender". It was actually *transgenic* mice, which have been genetically modified to be better human analogs and are very useful in medical research. Stupidity is dangerous! www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

JD Vance is a poor excuse for a human being.
It's not necessarily the most important part of today's Oval Office debacle, but Vance suggested that Zelenskyy has never thanked the U.S. for its support — and that's demonstrably ridiculous.
