NSF reorganization is, frankly, a bit odd, and we haven't run a story on it partly because it's hard to know what to make of it. The impetus for reorg, as I understood it, was to limit the siloing that occurs because NSF has so many (35ish) divisions. Now there will be 50+ sections.

New from #SCIMaP - analysis of the White House’s Proposed FY 2026 National Science Foundation Budget.

Take-home: Slashing NSF by >50% will lead to ~$11 billion in economic loss and extensive job loss and reduced training opportunities in communities nationwide.

🧪 Russ Vought, a Project 2025 architect, is currently withholding $2.5 billion from NSF's budget for this year.

This move is:

-Illegally secretive
-Unusual and suspect
-Disrupts science
-Subverts Congress

It's also urgent because the *fiscal* year ends Sept 30 (call your rep).

🧵 Let's unpack...

🧪 The NSF grant terminations hit women, racial & ethnic minorities, and those with disabilities the hardest.

E.g.:

--Female PIs were 58% of canceled grants (but 34% of all active grants)

--Black PIs were 17% of canceled grants (but 4% as base rate)

A closer look shows this is structural... 🧵

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

Have you ever looked at a weather map online? Or seen a nice visualization of weather forecast model output? If so, NSF Unidata almost certainly made that possible in one way or another.

Modern meteorological education would not be possible without the data, tools, and resources they provide.
Due to the current gap in funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the NSF Unidata Program is pausing most operations effective 12 May 2025. Nearly all staff will be furloughed until funds from our existing NSF grant become available. For more information, see buff.ly/d2TC1Oy
