I’ve just looked at my Apple Watch and I’m a bit worried. Does anybody know how accurate the fitness tracker is because it’s possible I might have to take the afternoon off?

One other small issue. While listening to the Podcast I looked down at my Apple Watch fitness tracker and saw this. Gave me a bit of a shock but I might get out of doing the groceries.

A lot of people called Sarah seem very keen to interact with me. Last week it was all Camillas. Bot farms must think I’m fickle….

I think my walking fur ball of a cat is moulting. At this rate I’m going to have to learn how to knit.

Little known fact. Handel had previously suffered a stroke and when in Dublin for the premiere of Messiah, he suffered another mild stroke or TIA.

On the other hand, it’s not very antisemitic. Really Ireland has a problem with the actions of the Israeli government which has amongst its members 2 people facing ICC arrest warrants for war crimes and 1 or 2 convicted of terrorist offences.

Always worth reading through the OECD Health at a Glance report this time of year. One thing that’s interesting is that the drop in life expectancy seen during the Covid pandemic seems to have largely resolved.

Forgotten female heroes of STEM Vesta Stoudt. The unsung inventor of Duct Tape in 1943. It was originally used to seal ammunition boxes, so they could be more easily opened by soldiers in an emergency.
The 1st rule of engineering remains ‘if you can’t fix it with duct tape, you haven’t used enough’.

Many thanks to Prof Nick Maynard for delivering the John Stearne Quatercentenary Lecture in St James’s Hospital. His presentation on ‘Gaza: an attack on healthcare’ was a harrowing description of the effect of the ongoing Israeli bombardment on medical services, staff and civilians in Gaza.

OK, Medical Historians and Doctors, (or anyone really) any suggestion on what this is for? It’s from the Ceppo in Pistoia

Sir Nathaniel Barry (born 1725), first Professor of Surgery and Midwifery in Trinity College Dublin. His wedding portrait now hangs in RCPI. He hasn’t done up his waistcoat fully so you can see that his shirt is made of silk and not wool.

This lane from the 1756 Roque Map of Dublin, is now in the grounds of our hospital. Quite suitable for our ENT surgeons.

Looking at the site of the Workhouse, now the site of St James’s Hospital, Dublin on Roque’s Map (1756). I get the impression from the street names that it wasn’t a good area.

It’s probably part of a shrine. The figure is similar to those on St Manchan’s Shrine. The Augustinians who established St John’s were French though, the Fratres Cruciferi, so why a part of an older Irish shrine? There is thought there might been a church, St Molua’s, there before the hospital.
