Another bird I'm excited to see returning to the northeast US: the black-crowned night heron!

I finally got a chance to catch a special visitor in Prospect Park.

This normally western-bound rufous hummingbrid defected to the better US coast #birds
A profile view of the immature male rufous hummingbird. Iridescent green-yellow feathers scatter across its back as they're replaced with a the rusty adult plumage. His wings are pushed forward and his body is almost upright, characteristic of the signature hummingbird flight style. A 1/4 turned view of the rufous hummingbird. Contrasting his almost pure white chest, red-orange begins to creep into the palette of his belly, fitting for the name of the species. Here, his wings are thrown back in a blur, as he approaches a feeder. Another 1/4 turned view. With this shot I really wanted to show off exceptional speed at which hummingbirds flap their wings. At 1/500th second shutter speed, his body is sharp and clear, but his wings are a complete blur, forming almost a circle around him. A better shot of the rufous hummingbirds underside, with his head turned upwards. The chaotic patterns we see in nature reveal themselves again in the detail of the hummingbirds throat. His tail is almost fully orange, while the white-tipped feathers created an aesthetic fan.

A ring-billed gull in full adult-breeding plumage — clean white around the head and chest with a dark-grey back, black wing tips, and a orange-red eye-ring — turns towards the camera on a snowy day. The ring-billed gull's vibrant red-orange eye-ring sharply contrasts the frost on its bill from feeding in the snow.

The smallest bird I saw today, and a lifer! I loved watching this tiny dino hunt on the beach.
An American Pipit on a pebbly beach: a small bird with a brownish back, and a brown-streaked yellow underside. This one has a distinct white supercilium. The American pipit rocks its head back as it takes a step forward. A profile view as the pipit scans for its next meal. Here's a better view of its distinct supercilium. I wasn't too happy with how the last orange-crowned picture turned out, mostly due to iso noise, so here's another shot. #birds

It has a worse background, but I think it's fun giving small birds this hyperdramatic lighting.

Which crop do you like the best?

Common grackles were everywhere in Prospect Park yesterday.

They had a gang perched in a tree towards the center of the lake, and were dispatching pairs to different parts of the park.
