Storm rainfall totals for this atmospheric river have eclipsed an inch from Seattle southward. As usual the mountains are quite effective at ringing out additional moisture from these moist vapor streams.
It will be a bit windy this morning, peaking around 10-11 AM around Seattle.

Precipitation anomaly forecasts for the next two weeks look wet in the PNW.
A big part of this is another potent frontal system expected Friday — so trick or treating might be a repeat of last year for many.

You can’t script it. The Mariners are willed to victory by Humpy the fish finally winning his first race in the middle of the 15th inning. The crowd chants “Humpy Humpy” as the trident crosses off the ALDS win.

HRRR forecast for 4 pm in Detroit shows some lingering showers. Nothing too heavy. A few hours later it is completely clear. So a delay is possible but the Mariners will play today. (hopefully we get a delay to start the game later!)

Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected Tuesday afternoon on the western slopes of the Cascades, especially in areas prone to gap winds (Enumclaw, I-90 corridor, US-2 corridor). We are lucky there are no ongoing fires in this area, but any new starts have the potential to spread rapidly.

Busy day of wildfires on satellite imagery. I count 6 smoke plumes in Washington and three more in southern BC.

The airmass currently over the Seattle area is near the all-time record for highest moisture content in terms of both integrated precipitable water and surface dew point.
There have only been a handful of observations at Sea-Tac airport around the current dew point of 65 F over the 80 year record.

Cool radar loop on the lee side of the Olympic Mtns showing a sharp edge to the rain shadow recovery. We’re likely seeing sharp upward motion associated with a mountain wave here, causing precip to rapidly reform. Maybe a bit of instability being released as well…

Smoke from the Bear Gulch fire is overspreading Seattle this evening. Considering the proximity of the fire we’ve been fortunate to mostly avoid the smoke. No such luck at the moment.

~1 in 10 year event for mid-August. Which makes sense given the last August storm of this significance was probably 2015.

A rare summer atmospheric river is headed for the PNW on Fri-Sat.
After an unusually dry spring/summer, this is a highly beneficial event for drought stressed plants and reducing wildfire risk. Around 0.5-1.0" expected in WA lowlands, 1-3" in mountains.
Has been trending south in recent runs.

Couple pics from chasing hail with the ICECHIP project, this was Sun 6/22 in northeastern Nebraska. Not much of a hail producer but good eye candy.

Just 0.15" of rain in Seattle through the first half of May (monthly average = 1.88"). With steadier rain expected this evening through Saturday night (espec. in convergence zone), we should be closer to 1 inch on the month by Sunday evening. Not great for outdoor activities but we need the rain!
