Oh god yeah. The (current) ink engine was one of the first things I built in C#… I would build it very differently nowadays!

Also, in iOS 26, my simultaneousGesture for the horizontal swipe prevented scrolling on the scroll view, so I had to move the gesture up to a modifier on ScrollView, which figures out which child you’re swiping 😅 phew

Makes me wonder if there’s an opportunity to (re)make games of this type but with more ethical paywalls / business models 🤔
Apple Arcade is good but it shouldn’t be the only solution.

Oh god yeah I’m so nostalgic for the days when some of these old classics were just fun little indie games, albeit ones that became super popular.
Even Angry Birds, Cut the Rope etc. Nowadays they’ve been turned into ad slop ☹️

I used to think Duolingo was great - charming UX, quirky presentation, addictive in a good way that encouraged learning. Over time i slowly decided they’re kinda misleading because they will never move your language ability beyond a fairly superficial level.
Now they’re exploitative junkware.

- no clear separation between parent and child in the app. It presents a 5 year old with the paywall where the default highlighted buttons sign you up for a subscription or link you out to download a new game etc.
I expect this from obviously bad taste games on the App Store, not from Duolingo 🤬

- ad supported games should be banned for kids generally (forcing kids to watch ads for shitty other apps ugh)
- deliberately misleading buttons on paywall, hard to close
- no pricing on paywall, encouraging you to sign up for a free trial without telling you how much it costs

Mostly, it’s just very well designed. I have a long list of specific nitty gritty technical little things I like. It’s also really fast and lightweight for what it is (Unity is pretty bloated by this point).
Narrative… nothing specific I don’t think, it’s just really nice to work with.
