I don't understand why people like @nauerbach.com say the regular season is important for Indiana/SMU making the field. However, at the same time propose to punish the conference champions. If conference championship games exist the "winners" should get a bye as they had to win an extra game.
Had the CFP gone by its rankings w/o requiring top four seeds be conference champions, these would have been the first-round games:
5. Notre Dame
12. Clemson
6. Ohio State
11. Arizona State
7. Tennessee
10. SMU
8. Indiana
9. Boise State
