American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

Wonderful 1950 letter in which J. Robert Oppenheimer very patiently explains to Eleanor Roosevelt that flying saucers do not exist--and tells a funny story about human fallibility, and how all the Los Alamos scientists tried to get the local Air Force base to shoot down a UFO.

This, of course, I do not believe. ... There is not any credible evidence; and certainly the kind of explanation proposed [in the papers] does not lead one to believe in the phenomenon they are trying to explain. There is perhaps one thing one can learn. It is not just that men, and even their accounts of what they see and experience, are fallible and subject to error; it is that arriving at the truth can often be a more difficult and troublesome thing than we like to think. During the war, very shortly before the test of the first atomic bomb, people at Los Alamos were naturally in a state of some tension.
