*for context*

Increased defence (arms race) spending robs health, education and foreign aid budgets, which generate abundant social and economic returns
(defence has poor ROI)

$371 billion annually to LMICs to support the health SDG(3) could save 97 million lives by 2030 ‼️

😮 Why care about the arms industry & health?

Global military expenditure = $2.7 trillion
Top 100 arms companies' revenue = $632 billion
5 largest arms exporters (US, France, Russia, China, Germany) = 75% of world’s arms supply
Conflicts = highest since WW2
Civilian deaths = up 30% in past year

📢 Today we publish a thought-provoking Series of articles examining the arms trade in health.

@kamranabbasi.bsky.social & I problematise current “warfare vs welfare” debates, arguing for more scrutiny of the arms industry & renewed support for global peace dividend.

A rare peek inside Lambeth Palace, home of the Archbishop of Canterbury, just over the river from Westminster, London.

And his chapel! An 11th century treasure with wooden stalls commemorating some very special (to me) countries (er former colonies). I’m not religious but I was mesmerised.

🇬🇧 aid cuts in favour of “security” are political not practical - they are naive, ill informed and dangerous.

“The UK’s troubling retreat from foreign aid and health will make the world less resilient and the UK more exposed.”
