Archer 1200s near Main St. (in school colors!) Sorry I couldn't see them in use.

Lots of newer protected bike lanes, with an informational poster from the first one in 2019.I saw curb protected and parking protected.

I am so impressed with the changes going on in Ann Arbor. Here's a mini-thread, staring with completed and under construction curbless environments on State St.

It's Sunday night. 10pm. This two-person sanitation team is out collecting items that didn't fit into the city's container systems. This is how you keep a city clean.

Did the thing.

(Took out the trash.)

Put it in the Louvre!

Happy anniversary to our family bike! Put 1,500 miles on it in year one. Can't wait to see what happens next year!

Or sell Aperol Spritzes in the park!

Finally, there were two things I saw where I thought, "yeah, Philadelphia IS doing this!"

The first was this fountain infrastructure in a public plaza--looks just like Dilworth, right?

The second was this massive Calder sculpture. We definitely can do that.

Many cities install chairs like these. Some may (perhaps rightly) argue that these are defensive in nature, but Nice had plenty of benches as well. However, I think these chairs encourage conversation with someone you know-- or someone you don't!

There is a lot of discussion about daylighting Philadelphia's intersections, a wonderful and surprising development. I believe that bike racks are a simple, cost effective, and appropriate way to do so, so long as emergency vehicles can make the turn.

NYC has started seeing more delivery companies use smaller-scale vehicles and that is certainly something that Philadelphia should encourage in its commercial core. But smaller vehicles overall should be legalized in the US.

Philadelphia has a long tradition of committing to public art. But I love the playfulness of the public art in Nice.

Philadelphia's playgrounds have a long way to go too. The Anna Verna playground at FDR park is a great start as is the proposal at Franklin Square. Playgrounds abroad are full of whimsy but also "risky play," which helps children build confidence and resilience.

Also, trampolines!

The bike lanes in Nice were some of the best designed I've ever seen. Different streets have different configurations. One street has pedestrian-grade painted lanes (like our new lane on Erie Ave) with bus bumpout while the next street has curb and greenery protected street-level lanes.

Could this be a "Why can't us?" thread without a look at waste management? From containerized trash, to a Big Belly competitor, to the street sweepers' equipment, we can be doing so much more to ensure a cleaner Philadelphia.

Couldn't resist getting the video of bollards in action (vehicles exiting the pedestrian zone).
