The NHL and the NFL are even below that. They’re just the top leagues running a championship, ffs. The fact that one happens to be international doesn’t mean that any team represents the whole of the US or Canada, and the other is even just national. And don’t get me started on the “World Series”. 😂

TL;DR: playing the anthem at the Super Bowl? Understandable. Playing it even in regular NHL games? Nope, not normal. We don’t play our national anthems for, say, *local* teams at the UEFA Champions League. Teams represent *cities*, and may not have been actual national champions to begin with. 🙄

Also, why do they keep playing the national anthem for every single fucking sporting event? In Europe we only ever do so for the final national cup match of whatever discipline, or national team matches. It’s honestly cringe, if not creepy, in that it’s forced patriotism bordering on nationalism.
