On the flip side, it's brought me closer to finally becoming a Naruse > Ozu and Mizoguchi guy.

Let a 28 year old break me a month or two ago and it's gotten me mountain biking alone to Sun Kil Moon on a Sunday night.

Gang of Four at The Opera House. Feel like the only person here not in their 40s.

Eiko Ishibashi at The Garrison.

Didn't watch much new this January (instead mostly revisited Lynch films) but I saw and liked these.

Sum 41 is the most successful group of people to come out of the town I live in, and they're doing a show & meet and greet at my old highschool. Cool of them to do this.

I watched it back a couple times late last year and I'm pretty sure it made an ancient LB mutual I've had since 2018 log it 2.5 stars with a review that went something like "Jesus Christ early Herzog is so overrated among my mutuals".

Have not seen this for 6 years.

Had absolutely no intentions of seeing this but Cineplex brought back $5 tickets and I need to get out of the house.

Wanted to get into Rohmer last year and, after getting off to a good start, ended up rerouting to Garrel.

Of everything I've seen this year, excluding pre-established canonical films, this was the biggest highlight. There's a charm to the scenes where Li attempts to pry into Ma's past only to be wryly dismissed and told "it's all bullshit."

Lingchi: Echoes of a Historical Photograph (2002): Transgressive short on the "death by a thousand cuts" execution method from Imperial China reserved for extreme crimes. The film restages the 1904 execution, its slow and methodical process, photographed and spread to the West by a French soldier.

Night and Fog in Zona (2015): Jung Sung-il's 4hr Wang Bing doc, a travelogue on Wang and Co's filming of Three Sisters and 'Til Madness... interspersed between chats w/ locals and visits to old subjects. Quiet long takes, scenes of the Yunnan landscape, it's edited in a way to mimic Wang's style.

Level Five (1997): Godard programmed this in the leadup to Notre Musique, Marker's doc on a programmer tasked with making a game on the Battle of Okinawa. Research delves the project into moral questions on history and humanity. The visuals are uniquely expressive in that early internet-era way.

2H (1999): A doc on Chinese expats in Tokyo, namely Ma Jinsan, a 95 year-old KMT general who fled to Japan after the Chinese Civil War. His final days are captured by Li Ying (an indirect subject himself). There are subplots but its best moments come in the quiet scenes of Ma's day-to-day life.

Backing up some files on my phone and pleasantly surprised by these pictures I distinctly remember taking the day after I watched Out 1 while listening to the Labuza-Rosenbaum pod on the film.

Went through a two-week phase in February where I listened to nothing but Polish jazz after being in a car wreck on the highway involving several people. A strange time. (Everyone was fine, other guy somehow covered everything).

Got a short video by Jeff Tweedy. Hopefully next year, Morrissey will call me a slur.
