BREAKING: Amazon workers in NYC are going on strike right before Christmas—the company's busiest time.

The first unionized Amazon warehouse is going to shut down in a historic walkout.

Workers plan to hit the company where it hurts to win their first union contract.

This right here ⬇️ The new shiny things are all well and good (sometimes) but the biggest impact is from getting the basics right - clear structure, guidelines and expectations; timely and regular feedback; (signposted) support
My evergreen #AcademicSky hot take is that the height of innovation and excellence is just getting the basics right and doing the simple stuff really well. Clear communication and structure trump new fangled complexity every time.

I found this an incredibly helpful and insightful thread in thinking through ways in which we create & shape systems & dynamics as we think we simply investigate/study them - w apols for clumsy wording
Data is never ‘collected’, it is only *generated*.

This isn’t merely a pedantic semantic gripe; by misrepresenting ‘data’ as something that exists in nature & has only to be scooped up, evasion of accountability for data harms has already begun

Data doesn’t exist until someone constructs it

Teaching in a different environment requires us to try some different strategies- great tips here from @theeddesigner.bsky.social on facilitating whole class discussions online. I like incorporating things like Mentimeter too, as an alternative to the chat. Anything you would add?
As a Masters student, we had this lecturer that would pose questions to the class, and some of us would respond. She critiqued our responses so heavily that we quickly stopped engaging. Moral of the story: support those that respond first because they are also supporting you. #academicsky

Like @dkernohan.bsky.social i don’t know how we actually fix the workloads issue but it’s a conversation we need to have. HE has long relied on staff goodwill & passion for what we do but it’s not sustainable - our working conditions are students’ learning conditions, not doing anyone any favours
NEW on Wonkhe: It's easy to understand why we get sucked in to working long hours. David Kernohan asks what it would take for us to address this issue before it becomes a real problem https://buff.ly/3ZqbdPL
