When you've got Pictures at an Exhibition on your headphones, and Great Gate of Kiev hits just as you walk through a big door out into the light.

It's probably the case that all times and places push you toward the "am I right about this current thing or what" style of humor, but I do worry instagram etc. have made it almost obligatory. If you wanna be said, imagine a favorite brilliant author of the past having to post 3x/week to sell books.

People who aren't grad students pirate books??

"If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter." - lots of people, apparently
Well, yes, that's the problem. It wouldn't be helping, it would just be making more work for me because I would have to clean up its prose. I want to write my own stuff, not edit what an LLM puts out. Plus I am more energy efficient.
I anticipate that if you asked an AI to help you write anything, the quality would be LESS than if you just did it yourself.

Sometimes I do think about the amount of money that I, at 38, have shoveled into the Social Security Administration.

Saw Boy and the Heron for the second time. "Dream logic" is just another name for cheating. Tell a damn story.

Can't think of a book that "changed me" at the moment, but gets me a bit melancholy that the HP books get zero play in this thread yet probably did this work for a lot of people. And I get it. Among her sins is igniting and then punishing an enthusiasm for books and reading for a generation.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Misread this sentence, now I'm a bit enamored by the possibility of "took" as a neologism. "My took was that birds aren't dinosaurs. But I've grown, and my opinion has changed."

"The way I rebel against the idea of basing self-worth on utility is to dream of worlds where that's not true anymore rather than psychoanalyze myself out of what I think is an adaptive response to the world we live in."

Some amount of squabbling is fine, actually. Infinitely preferable to Schumer, "we're continuing to talk."
Abigail Spanberger takes a swipe at Mamdani, saying "maybe he should be a Democrat" and that his campaign promises are dishonest.

So, the one headline was wrong and will continue to be wrong, but it's dumb to equate the part with the whole. (duuuuumb.)

Lots of people recognize 1999 was a banner year for art. NIN released The Fragile. I mean, name a better double album (to my 13-year-old self, and he will stare at you blankly for three minutes.)

Lukewarm take: calling out a response for "tone policing" is bad, actually. Seems A) to credit posting etc. with a form of violence, and B) discourages people from addressing connotation - which is like a whole dimension of language, pretty big stuff.

It's hard to come up with creative ways of reminding readers which one has the goatee, which is why there's a relative dearth of mirror universe plots in sff novels.

I think there has to be a place in politics for people who went through some stuff, made bad decisions, and were morons on reddit for a while. It's 2025 and there are a lot of them out there now.

BUT like you may have to show a bit more growth before you run for the US Senate my dude.

Add to the list of weird social media phenomena a kind of second-order gaslighting, generated every very once in a while like swamp gas when the internet manifests an expertise in semiotics that normal, unconnected people simply do not have.
