It's Manly Wade Wellman's birthday. The Valley So Low was the first collection of his that I read, and I checked out the local library's copy at least once a month for several years running. To say I inhaled those stories is an understatement. If I'm any sort of writer at all, it's due to Wellman.

So, apparently I had two Sherlock Holmes stories drop last month. The first, "The Adventure of the Third Sketch", finds Holmes solving a mystery involving a haunted mill and an escaped prisoner from his armchair... www.amazon.co.uk/Sherlock-Hol...

The older I get, the more I understand Jack Kirby. In other news, I finally finished this essay, about which I will speak more later.

So, I'm playing around with do-it-yourself cover art via stock photos, and does this remind anyone else of a cheapo 1970s adventure paperback cover? Note: I ain't looking for advice on how to make it better. If I wanted better, I'd pay an actual artist.

Happy Not-Dead-Yet Day. Have a dog. She loves you. She also loves rolling in sheep shit, so hey-ho.

What I like about Tasky is his lack of fashion sense extends to his students. Look at these guys.

Finishing up Zelazny's A Night in the Lonesome October for what must be the hundredth time. An excellent holiday read, featuring dang near every major horror icon plus a few extra, and chapters that correspond to the days of the month. What are you reading for Halloween?

I watched the so promising yet utterly tedious 1965 Italian horror film, The Embalmer, yesterday. Never has so much potential been so utterly wasted. How does one make Venice boring? How, I ask you? Somehow, they found a way.

Oh, by the way, I have a story in the newest issue of Ghosts & Scholars (#47), if you're one of the subscribers. "A Crooked Path" finds folklorist Artemis Whitlock wandering around a very unpleasant bit of pasture in the Pennines...

I finally got a chance to watch In a Violent Nature (2024) last night and...I liked it? Like, it took some old saws and gave them a new bite, so to speak. It was interesting. Long moments of silence punctuated by almost cartoonish violence.

She maintains it even while sleeping. Its very impressive. In contrast, the dog is utterly gormless.

This animal has nearly murdered me three times today by choosing the most inopportune moments to dart past and/or stop suddenly on the stairs. Hard to say whether it's malice or coincidence.
