An update, 20 Nov 2025: In 1993, even a KGB general admitted that the interpretation I explained above is by and large correct. bsky.app/profile/jmko...
(Incidentally, I also found a fricking KGB general admitting in 1993 that Winter War had been a major mistake, that it and Soviet threats after the war were why Finland sided with Nazis in 1941, and that without Winter War, Finland would've likely stayed neutral.)

The one where I discuss the reasons why #Finland, despite odds a #democracy, ended up joining forces with #Nazi #Germany in 1941. #WW2 #history

A short thread about #Finland in the Second World War with a lesson from history: why solidarity matters, and it's imperative for #democracy that democracies help threatened democracies.

As many people know, Finland was a de facto Nazi ally in the Second World War. But why? 1/

The one where I try to explain how it feels to be a leftist Finnish reservist and live next door to Russia, in March 2022:

bsky.app/profile/jmko...
Greetings again from a Finnish leftist, especially to everyone identifying as progressive or leftist but living far away from Russia at the moment! I'll try to explain a bit how it feels like to live in a country neighboring Russia, and why we seem to disagree about e.g. NATO.1/

The one from 22 February 2022 - two days before the Kremlins launched their full scale invasion of #Ukraine - where I explain why this Finnish leftist sees the situation quite differently from many Western progressives:

bsky.app/profile/jmko...
Greetings from a Finnish leftist! The international situation has apparently left many people in the English-speaking countries confused. I write this thread in the hopes of sharing a perspective I believe is widely if not unilaterally shared in Finland, most leftists included.

Ikävä kyllä aina vain ikivihreä, 12.9.2022 kirjoittamani ketju suomalaisen velkahysterian historiasta. Tommi Uschanovin e r i t t ä i n hyvästä kirjasta Miksi Suomi on Suomi:

Kaivetaanpas esille erinomaisen mainio kirja, Tommi Uschanovin Miksi Suomi on Suomi. #velka #velkaantuminen

Uschanov tuo muun ohessa erinomaisesti esille, miten suomalaista talouskeskustelua on AINA hallinnut aivan päätön velkahysteria. Suosittelen lukemaan, muutama nosto: 1/

And there has never been such a crushing victory in war that it would've been preferable to an avoided war.

We cannot help geography, but we can build a stronger defense against bullies together. 35/35
February 11, 2025 at 9:04 AM
And now it seems that the lords of the Kremlin are prone to making catastrophic misjudgements about the will and capability of small countries to defend themselves alone.

No one can guarantee they won't be making the same mistake with Finland some day in the future. 34/
February 11, 2025 at 9:04 AM
But there is another, more important reason. Finnish military exists to prevent a war. It wins if it never again has to fight. 33/
February 11, 2025 at 9:04 AM
Depending on the overall global situation and the strategic warning time, we might require resupply of critical munitions within weeks, and replacements for equipment losses soon after that.

That is one reason we are almost certainly going to join NATO now. 32/
February 11, 2025 at 9:04 AM
After all, we know that we cannot win a protracted war against the most likely opponent. The Finnish defenders would cause any invader horrendous casualties for several weeks or perhaps months, but if casualties aren't a concern, overwhelming numbers would eventually wear us down. 31/

Marraskuulta 2024: toisia puutteellisesta NATO-innosta syyttäneillä näkyi olevan kultakalan muisti. Oikeasti kaikki puolueet olivat skeptisiä pitkään. #turpo

bsky.app/profile/jmko...

#turpo

bsky.app/profile/jmko...
Jos haluaa oppia tekemään parempia arvauksia tulevaisuudesta, on aika oleellista käydä läpi omia aikaisempia mielipiteitään ja miettiä, mikä meni pieleen. Kävin tässä läpi mitä olen NATOsta kirjoitellut vuosien varrella.

The one where I explain why the West should've been making preparations for a #military intervention in #Ukraine , even if we weren't actually going to intervene.

Because it would've helped to force the Kremlin to real negotiations.

Originally from 26 Jan 2023. #strategy

bsky.app/profile/jmko...
How the Western aid to #Ukraine helps even outside the battlefield, and why the West should begin credible preparations to intervene directly?

Finland's Winter War (1939-40) provides an interesting historical case study of a somewhat comparable situation. Let's take a look! 1/

The one from Feb 2023, where I outline what really killed #nuclear power in the 80s: economics + the deregulation of #electricity markets. NOT "regulation" or "the greens."

(An article I wrote about this won the 2023 best article award by the Finnish Nuclear Society BTW.)

bsky.app/profile/jmko...
Let me be very clear about this:

The environmentalists were NOT the reason #nuclear power stalled in the 1980s.

There is absolutely no support for a theory, popular in some circles, that we could've been fossil free "if not for the Greens." 1/

November 22, 2024 at 9:55 AM
Sinitaivaassa pitää seurata paljon useampia käyttäjiä (tai feedejä) kuin täällä Twitterissä, jotta aikajanalla alkaa tapahtua. Seurattavien löytämiseen mainio apu ovat erinäiset aloituspakkaukset, joita käyttäjät ovat koonneet. Napin painalluksella saa seurattua kaikkia!
November 22, 2024 at 9:50 AM
PS.
