So the US paid Argentina’s bill to the Fund due on 1 Nov.
Wondered if they would do that but didn’t check because thought they’d never try it.
I assume this is to avoid running down Bessent’s liquid TESF balance any more than he has to … ?

His deal was $20/5 years, including 2026 which he probably won’t see.

Argentina still has a few billion here and there unresolved from > 20 years ago but yes the 20/21 workout was cleaner because of the CACs.

Senegalese are waiting for yet another 🇫🇷 national as Fund MD.
It might be a while. Georgieva’s second term has 4 years to run and since she’s a lame duck she no cares whatever threats 🇫🇷 is making to her about 🇸🇳.

The woyane have only themselves to blame. They thought they could live forever on money borrowed by the rest of the country.

The historical solution to the management costs of assets bought at firesale prices was colonization or slavery but these are generally out of fashion today. A modern solution is a joint company with some locals but the locals won’t always stay bought

True about real assets. Again diff from fin assets cos real assets have to be managed (mines have workers) and can be re-nationalized by force or held by gangs (Congo).

That is true for financial assets such as bonds. Peso weakens so demand for 🇦🇷 bonds weakens because lenders know borrower has fewer dollars in which to repay.
For fixed assets (mines, land, hydro for export) it’s different. Peso weakens so USD buys more. Country is for sale.

This is how fucking dumb Tubby is.
Lenders will raise the down payment to put less capital at risk and will up the interest rate to recover their money faster.

USA brass decided VC were fighting cos they were hungry. They print batches of “Surrender & be liberated” leaflets, soaked them in fish sauce (nước chấm) & dropped them from choppers
Some unpatriotic GI remarked “Thank God the brass didn’t think they were horny”.

The disbursement of the US$20 B is not so clear.
One hypothesis (???) is that the US$20 B is a sort of HELOC on which Argentina makes small episodic withdrawals when it has a bond payment due. The 0.621 B in SDRs was charges due to the Fund on 1 Nov and maybe the US money was used for that.
