Just finished that one last night, so seconded! Really tough read of a black family in the 50s. Boy is sent to a “reformatory” for boys run by a devil of a man. Supernatural elements, but they really add to the story. Reminded me of Collin Whitehead’s “The Nickel Boys” which I also highly rec.

I’m in Germany right now and saw a sign, like a real sign on a road, that said (in German), “butter loves you, margarine wants to kill you.” They do not mess around here, whether with Nazis or margarine.

The Ebenezum Trilogy by Craig Shaw Gardner is wonderful. A wizard who’s allergic to magic, trial by custard, and an assassin who pretty much only says “doom.” Hilarious and so much fun. My 11yo son loves them and also loves the Tiffany Aching series by TP.
