In Ireland, burning land releases substantial greenhouse gases and smoke. Half of fires are in 'Special Areas of Conservation' and much of this is presented as 'traditional management'.

Rewilding can help, as can low intensity grazing with cattle, but we need to ban all burning ASAP 🔥

However, coal in the ground is safely sequestered for ever, whereas wood is not. The carbon in wood is already in circulation. Much more important to keep fossil fuels in the ground than to worry about energy density.

If buying and owning land was such a bad deal, the price would go down. Then less tax would be due. It would also help new entrants to farming.
