i remember when this was announced and it seemed like it could’ve been just that, but as far as anyone knows it never went anywhere

i think wicked’s popularity *could* be what changes that and gets people to expand their horizons, but whether it’s a “too little too late“ situation remains to be seen

i mean, disney’s not exempt from that but i can think of cases where other versions of stories were able to have their time in the spotlight
that’s not even getting into the oz adaptations that are more or less mgm’s leftovers

It's like everything is doomed to be under its shadow. For all the complaining about how the Disney versions of certain stories are the first thing one thinks of when bringing up said stories, I hear nary about how w/ Oz, it's pretty much - Wicked excepted - only the MGM film.

that, and i also don’t really like how the mgm movie is (for the most part) where the public perception of oz begins and ends

you can see that perception in how later home media releases for return try to make it seem more whimsical and light-hearted than it really is

i don’t say this just because i feel return is the more faithful representation of the books, it’s just an insanely cool movie in general
