Sometimes institutions meant to protect the public good, like our national parks, are purposefully underfunded by those who want to extract from them. Then those same people will point to the underfunded institutions and say, “look, this isn’t working, we need to privatize.” That’s by design.

Rather than wait until Jan. 26th for Flock Safety to begin taking down its cameras, Eugene city staff have uninstalled 55 of 57 cameras. The remaining two planned for next week.

Thanks to reporting by the Register-Guard newspaper, you can read all about Flock ALPR cameras yourself, and I encourage you to do so. A fully informed public is the best way to ensure our local governments make responsible decisions.

Further, Medford police has been known to give suspicious reasons for searching Eugene’s Flock data, with the stated reason “hehehe.” This doesn’t hold up to scrutiny, and would lead any reasonable person to assume their motives are not in good faith.

In-state agencies, like police and county law enforcement, can access our local Flock data with only one-word reasons, like “investigation”. Our local PD has to trust these searches are legitimate based on that, and not an explanation or a case number.

Accessing that data is against state law, as we are a sanctuary state. This shows clearly that the existing safeguards to ensure Flock data adheres to state law are insufficient.

Someone asked, doesn’t Flock only impact criminals? Actually, Flock’s own internal audits have already found that out-of-state agencies, like the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), have accessed Flock’s ALPR Data in Oregon cities like Eugene.

HB 2038 frames waste and meltdown risks as legal and economic hurdles, not long-term safety liabilities, biasing the study toward approval. There is still no way to safely dispose of nuclear waste, and Oregon state law prohibits nuclear waste depositories.
December 17, 2025 at 5:29 PM
Why might Rep Boomer Wright, who is expected to retire, carry this nuclear bill in the legislature? Is he fully informed? Amazon wants SMRs to power their AI data centers. Are they unbiased? Why would Amazon invest in a study that only looks at benefits without considering potential long term risks?
December 17, 2025 at 5:23 PM
Learning about the proposed $450k study in Oregon (funded by Amazon) regarding small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) which was previously HB 2038, but died in committee last year. I understand the study looks at the benefits, but how can a legitimate study only look at the pros and not the cons?

I strongly disagree with the DOJ on this one. Documenting ICE to preserve records when they break the law is a civic duty, and freedom of speech is clear in the U.S. Constitution. We have due process and asylum laws in this country.

I will say that our meeting with the FPD chief was very respectful and productive. My impression is that he’s working in good faith, responsibly, and is open to the public’s concerns. Of course public safety comes first, which is reasonable and very important.

So what people in Florence are telling me is that they’d like the Flock cameras turned off. Some people believe the worst case scenarios. I think ALPR is still a good tool, especially to catch criminals. But the risk of abuse is a legitimate concern.

Within the State of Oregon, local enforcement can access each other’s Flock data, trusting each other to follow state law. Is each department as professional as our great Florence PD?
