That's one hell of a symbol of ever there was one.

3/3 That's where the Catholic Church fell so horribly short for so long. Hopefully the Anglicans here, and all organizations more generally, will have learned this lesson and do better

2)3 The important thing is that the organization responds by seeking to protect the victim, genuinely seek out and establish the truth, punish the perpetrator appropriately, and remedy any gaps in the process to try to prevent future incidents.

1/3 When it comes to this sort of thing, I tend to measure the organization by its response. Criminals and predators can be (and are) found anywhere...

"She has way more work to do before she even gets close to making amends."

I absolutely agree. But let's not discourage her from doing that work though with a bunch of negative posts that presumes her disingenuousness. Let's be open to the possibility of real repentance, even if its unlikely.

That said (for those who aren't familiar with traditional Christians) - excommunication is one step shy of complete exile from the church (which itself is pretty much unheard of in the modern era). Excommunication is reserved only for the gravest of sins/circumstances.

Surely they could be in principle. But I'm not a priest (I'm not even Catholic) so the reason(s) why that has not been done to date are not something I can answer. I certainly wouldn't be opposed though ;)
November 13, 2025 at 6:13 AM
I'm not sure what Catholic theology says about the notion of blanket excommunication. Given the severity of that kind of sanction it might be required to be an individual thing. Interesting idea though.

6/6 Either religion has a public role to play, or it does not, you can't have it both ways.

(I happen to believe that it does have a public role, within limits, because we need them to be our societal conscious and prophetic voice speaking truth to power).
November 13, 2025 at 5:57 AM
5/6 I would point out as well (general comment not directed specifically to you), that it's not fair to demand the church's involvement in issues where you agree and then cry "separation of church and state" when they speak out on issues where you don't agree.
November 13, 2025 at 5:57 AM
4/6 Ultimately, I love that the Catholic Church did this and I hope other religious bodies follow. But it's not a simple matter - the seriousness/extensiveness of the social justice issues must be weighed against the very real drawbacks of organizational (as opposed to individual) involvement.
November 13, 2025 at 5:57 AM
3/6 second, bringing religious leaders into the secular political fray like this could reinforce the idea that there should not be a separation of church and state, which is ironically one of the threats we most need to be conscious of right now with the rise of Christian nationalism.
November 13, 2025 at 5:57 AM
2/6 First - to speak as a church body, there needs to be a certain amount of unity among the laity (non-clergy) members to support it - otherwise the statement's legitimacy is undermined and it becomes hollow rather than compelling, and...
November 13, 2025 at 5:57 AM
1/6 For much the same reason that it is risky to bring religion into politics, it is likewise risky to bring politics into religion. Cynically, as others as have noted, the caution could be due to a desire to retain members/tithing. But I think perhaps more fairly, the concern is...

Actually, they can't because Trump and most of his lackeys are not (or do not claim to be) Catholic (though Vance is an obvious exception). The Catholic Church only has jurisdictional authority to excommunicate Catholics, not members of other denominations.
