What a powerful night. A evening with Bill Baxley and Doug Jones, hearing them talk about the prosecution and conviction of the klansmen responsible for the 16th St. Baptist Church bombing

I am reading very local and reading my own college John Giggle and his fabulous latest book about violence and civil rights in Tuscaloosa, AL. Methodologically and thematically, it’s such a treat. Anyone interested in working with local communities should read it.

We have a new banner in our department. On summer 2026, Dr. Margaret Peacock and I will take 10 students to Peru, spend a few days in Cuzco, hike to Choquequirao and to Machu Pichu!

Esta es la indigencia intelectual que AI está creando: usar a Grok para hacer un factcheck a un catedrático de historia contemporánea muy reconocido y que ha escrito ampliamente sobre la dictadura franquista.

Punk rockers still grabbed guitars and learned to play them. They didn’t just skip learning to play altogether.

These two piles are a (still incomplete) bundle of supplies my two children need to school. We are talking of several hundreds of dollars worth of stuff. Not only pencils and notebooks: cleaning products, bandaids, kitchen towels… things that a school should provide, but can’t. Not in Alabama

Saw this beautiful water fountain for adults, children, refill bottles, and dogs, and I wonder if by we can’t have nice things like this where I live in Alabama. The answer also hit me as quickly as I thought the question. Pay little or no direct taxes, get no services.

Today my children came to me with a coin they had found. I start looking at it, and I can’t believe my eyes. See for yourselves.

Thank you! The aqueduct was hilarious. I thought I was making an ass of myself, but honestly that is what I saw! Kudos for the artisan who designed it. I think you are right about the two escudos. Attaching a much clearer image here. It looks like a poorly made II.

I lied. This one from 1806 has the value in the edge: 8R (red marking) It did move around a bit.

As far as I know, the Spanish piece of 8 or peso de 8 reales from the 18th century did have the denomination in them. Look at this one I am attaching. It’s the 8 I marked. 8 reales, which makes one silver peso. Designs changed but that 8 was constant in all of them.
