Tuesday night, in an off-year election, a majority — yes, a goddamn majority — of eligible American voters agreed with me. These people spent eight months living in a woke-free America and collectively decided, “We don’t want this.” What we DO want is to be left the f—k alone. Contrary to what Ted Cruz might tell you, that’s what woke does. Woke lets you drive around town without the threat of a cop pulling you over to gun you down. Woke lets you be gender fluid without an emergency PTA meeting springing up outside your door. Woke lets you go to college without entering into a modern sharecropping agreement. It lets children read, lets every citizen be able to vote without a fuss, leaves the original recipe for Tylenol intact, and endeavors to keep our air and water clean. Woke, in other words, is good.

But for all of Miller's furious Cobra Commander rhetoric, for all the metastatic gilding and trophy clutter in Trump's Oval Office, for all the strident and signifying fascism down on the streets, the reality of all this is plain and shabby. It is not any kind of full-spectrum authoritarian command, or even the grubby paranoid snitchscape of oppressive surveillance states, but the more familiar sputtering busybody bullshit and hair-trigger offense of a deranged Homeowners Association. Not some grand tyranny directed from above, but a sweaty congeries of little tyrants patrolling the little fiefdoms they've arrogated for themselves, working less to knit their awful stupid grievances together than merely against their neighbors everywhere and anywhere possible. Vance, true to form, was just amplifying the one thing that Trumpism has ever offered—not real opportunity or purpose, not inclusion or community, not even personal advancement, but merely the chance to hurt other people and get away with it.

What are we to make of a man who called for the execution of the American president, and then was executed himself? What are we to make of an NFL that, on one hand, encourages us to “End Racism,” and, on the other, urges us to commemorate an unreconstructed white supremacist? And what of the writers, the thinkers, and the pundits who cannot separate the great crime of Kirk’s death from the malignancy of his public life? Can they truly be so ignorant to the words of a man they have so rushed to memorialize? I don’t know. But the most telling detail in Klein’s column was that, for all his praise, there was not a single word in the piece from Kirk himself.
