There are entire academic departments that are PNG at my agency because of a single bad actor.

More generally, I think the "publish or perish" mentality begets it - desperation makes people do dumb things.

In the endless battle of principles versus profits, the latter wins. Doesn't matter whether it's Ferdinand and Isabella, or Bob Iger, it's endured through the centuries.

Case in point, iirc the last caucus leader to migrate to the executive was Gerald Ford, and whatever his personal qualities, that's not famous for being a smashing success.

I'm old enough to remember the ill-fated Civilian Response Corps. This will have the same problem: We were unwilling to commit resources to establishing a full-fledged cadre of responders, and people/organizations weren't willing to be "on standby" to be disrupted at the drop of a hat.
