My hot take is that all popular modern browsers are bad. I prefer some feature sets over others, but they are all such resource hogs, and all have shortcomings. This feature has been added to Firefox (my normal browser on my personal machine), but it feels like something I shouldn't *have* to do.
'Unload tab' feature announcement, where the user can manually unload a tab to free up memory and resources, and have it reload when they return to it.

To avoid the clothing industry's A.I.-assisted supply chain, the author wore an old shirt and a pair of pants he had inherited from his grandfather. Before I started my experiment on a random Monday in October, I had to answer a fundamental question: How should I define A.I.? Many people associate the term with generative A.I., which burst onto the scene in 2022. It's the technology that churns out college English papers and concocts images of smiling customers for soft drink ads. But the A.I. umbrella also covers other types of programs capable of learning and evolving - including machine learning, which has been widespread since the 2000s. A machine learning program updates itself or its predictions based on new data. When the Waze app finds a shortcut to your sister's house, you can thank machine learning. To be A.I.-free, I decided, I would avoid both Gen A.I. and machine learning. I would be a purist. Still in bed, I reflexively grabbed my iPhone so that I could hold it in front of my face and unlock the screen. But no. Facial recognition runs on A.I. I typed in my passcode like it was 2017. What could I do with my phone now that it was open? Not much. No Facebook, no Instagram: Social media feeds are determined by A.I. and littered with A.I.-generated ads. How about a podcast? Nope. Many podcasts use A.I. editing programs to remove the "ums" and awkward silences. In the kitchen, my wife, Julie, flicked on the lights. I flicked them off. "Are you kidding me?" she asked, patiently. "The energy grid uses machine learning to predict where the demand will be," I explained. I spared her the details - that Con Edison feeds data from more than four million electric meters into a proprietary A.I. program to assess voltage and prevent equipment failure, as a company spokesperson told me. I told Julie there was no reason to worry, though: I had prepared for this eventuality by purchasing a portable solar-power generator. I plugged a lamp into it and lit up the kitchen with pride. There was also the fact that my lunch mates had reserved our table with the machine-learning-equipped Resy app. Further, the Parched Hospitality Group, which operates Hole in the Wall, uses A.I.-enhanced software for invoicing, payroll and food orders, according to Tom Rowse, the company's chief strategy officer. To atone for my restaurant sins, I decided to forage for my next meal in Central Park. I'd watched a video by Steve Brill, a forager known as Wildman who has gathered foodstuffs in New York City parks since the 1980s. I plucked up several plantain weeds (not to be confused with the much more delicious banana relatives called plantains). At dinner, I tried them. They tasted like the dirt they had come from. I erased the flavor with some red peppers a friend had gotten at an organic farm.

Recently finished Silo S2, and have been really enjoying it. In particular, the S2 finale is one of the most gripping episodes of TV I've watched in some time. Rebecca Ferguson is superb, as are Common, Tim Robbins & others. Some really effective visual work, impeccable SFX & production design.

Without wanting to get too deep about favourite films/Letterboxd top fours, the thing posts like this fail to recognise is that favourite films can be a constantly moving thing and also context dependent. My favourite films when I was 10 are not the same at 20, 30, or when I turn 40 soon(ish).

My experience of Nate Silver is he is not a serious person. I mean…read this for fucks sake: “Blueskyism's peak actually came before Bluesky was a thing”. You can’t just make up words by sticking “-ism” at the end, write 3,000 words about their rise and fall, and call yourself a thought leader.
Blueskyism's peak actually came before Bluesky was a thing, in roughly 2019/2020. (You'll notice that Blueskyists often have a lot of nostalgia for this period, the one and perhaps only time when they improbably became the prom king. This timing coincided with the 2020 presidential primary, when there was a huge gap between the most prominent voices on Twitter and those of the actual Democratic base. The ultimate result was the rejection of various more "online" and left-wing candidates for the stodgy and more centrist Joe Biden, but choices made during period continued to cast a shadow on the 2024 campaign, particularly after Harris's statements during that period were scrutinized once she took over for Biden.
