Someone claiming Zack Polanski is a lightweight politician in comparison to Ken Clarke or Paddy Ashdown. I can never understand these people who seem to think history is not just open to interpretation but can be completely rewritten. They will argue that someone assigned a certain gender can never be considered anything but, yet readily accept that Paddy Ashdown was a four-term prime minister, or Ken Clarke was Donald Trump’s mentor. Do they forget that the rest of us existed during that period we call “before yesterday”?

Philip Collins in The Observer, acting as an apologist for Israeli football hooligans because the bystanders they kick into unconsciousness or throw into canals will understand the sacrifices they have to make to appease a wanted war criminal. Seriously, Tortoise Media, I would be better off buying Haaretz. I have been an Observer reader for decades, even while serving overseas, but I think two price rises in a year - 12.5% in total - for this bilge is an insult. Same as for the other excerpt.

Reform have “pledged” to block a solar farm in Lincolnshire, a vast farming area where, if farming was profitable, nobody would countenance such a scheme. Farage never bothered turning up to the European Parliament to support farmers, and is now fiercely opposed to farmers getting in on the money available from Solar, although Tice was quick to embrace the technology for his own businesses and local Reform mayor Jenkyns was always pleased to boast of her support until she realised the grift was easier with fossil fuels. Mind you, like Farage, actually living in the area she claims to represent seems unattractive to her. Too many poor people with genuine problems. Far easier to jump on the brown envelope bandwagon.

#TheObserver has been scrutinising the detail of a report into the implosion of a private submarine in 2023, and thinks they might have found two microscopic traces of literary DNA that identify a key witness.

It’s obscure, based on arcane ephemera, but I think they might be onto something.
Excerpts from the report where the “mystery” person - fringe film director James Cameron - mentions making two small-scale, rarely-viewed films: Titanic and, in case that was too shaky to prove anything, The Abyss. The Observer has a noble and courageous history of investigative journalism. Tortoise Media seems determined to end that. Not with a bang; with a whimper.

Story about the far-right group Britain First claiming responsibility for a pitch invasion by two men at a football match yesterday. Harold’s eye might still be intact if that was his challenge at Hastings. The story says a third person was due to join them but (quote) “struggled to remove his jacket” (end quote). I saw his mum at the newsagents half an hour ago. She says he had a hot, sweaty night but his dad is getting parole on Thursday and has done an evening class on outer vestment shedding.

They dived, but one was caught, killed and butchered (for science, obviously. An experiment to see how much people will pay to eat whale). Exactly a year later the survivors saw the same ship and dived immediately. After exchanging vengeful glances, they swam under the ship and gave a huge blast from their blowholes, scuppering it. Laughing at the crew, thrashing about helplessly, one said “You know, they ate our friend. For REAL justice and retribution, we ought to eat them” The other replied, with a grimace: “Oh, no! I don’t mind a quick blowjob, but I draw the line at swallowing seamen.” Thank you.

I bet nobody at ‘ABRSM’ can name even a third of those ‘partners’, yet they expect me to trust them?

As it says in the post, a website that opened without my consent says it respects my privacy while telling me they want to share all my details with 1,537 partners (at least it doesn’t call them ‘carefully selected’, I suppose). Have you ever looked into these partners? I did, once. Obviously they don’t make it easy - the cookies don’t have names like “Betting conglomerate based in Uruguay”, or “South African manufacturer of alcoholic drinks”, but that is what some of them are. Some don’t actually make anything, simply act as an intermediary and sell on your information with ‘implied consent’ (you didn’t go to court to stop them). I neither drink nor gamble, yet companies offering these things want to clog up my inbox. Good ‘ere, innit?

Email from The Guardian, beginning “We’re funded by just 2.4% of our readers. I have never been a Guardian regular, although I am an Observer diehard. I have occasionally made a contribution in return for reading Guardian articles online. Now those articles are protected so I can’t read them, despite having paid towards their publication, and the Obbo is a travesty. Often it takes until page 5 to find anything other than photographs and adverts.

Prediction from 2023 that Cybertruck would build 250,000 to 500,000 cars a year, and had more than a million pre-orders - looking good, then. Actual real-world sales reached 39,000 in 2024, with 96% of pre-orders cancelled. First and second quarter figures for 2025 were 6,406 and 4,306 respectively. Extrapolating, sales would be zero by halfway through 2026. Still, at least the failing drug abuser isn’t launching surplus stocks into space yet. Perhaps a Twitter blue tick will come with a Cybertruck as a Freebie before too long. Maybe even two or more Cybertrucks for anyone who refuses to pay. Given the lawsuit over door failures in emergencies, maybe new models should come with a miniature submarine for occupants to escape fires via air conditioning ducts?

The state seal of Illinois is very sweet. It looks like the final design was chosen from entries in a competition held among local schools.
The state seal (State Seal?) of Illinois is very sweet. It has an eagle at the centre that looks white, wearing a comfortable home-knitted brown and cream pullover, holding a banner in its beak with four words on it - STATE, SOVEREIGNTY, NATIONAL, UNION, but sovereignty is written backwards. The eagle stands on a shield decorated with thirteen stars and thirteen red and white stripes - I assume signifying that Illinois was one of the original states. Next to the shield are the dates 1818 and 1868, possibly engraved on eagle droppings, then a river of blue beneath a stylised yellow half-sun. There is grass on the ground and leaves either side of the base of the shield. Most of the background is white, which makes the imagery clear but is also reminiscent of a child’s drawing. Around the top are the words “Seal of the State of Illinois”, and, at the bottom, “Aug. 26th 1818”, and all surrounded by a loop of yellow rope, or possibly a milled edge like a coin. Please don’t be offended - I am not trying to insult it, but it is very different to the kind of bland, meaningless things designed by consultants these days.
