120+ years of good years and not so good years are in the tree rings. The story of the stump is in the ALT. #photography #trees
This is the stump of a tree that was blown down and then cut by a mechanical timber harvester. The tree rings, alternating light and dark bands, show up clearly. I still need to go back to the stump to get an accurate count to determine the age of the tree. We had a wind storm last March that damaged or destroyed over 60 of the trees in one small section of our woods. I can't tell from the stump if it was a red or white oak. There were several of both species near this tree. We had a logger come in and do a salvage operation to allow us access to that part of the forest again and open up areas new growth. Based on past experience, tulip poplars will probably be the pioneer species in our forest succession. I'll add an accurate count of the tree rings and the species in a reply later today.

Magenta dogwood leaves are in focus in this photo. They stand out against an out of focus background of yellow-green and greeny-yellow beech leaves. It looks like nature took its inspiration from some old websites where a text box was in one color and the text in it was in a clashing color.

The road is covered with brown leaves. The yellow leaves on the trees are mostly on beeches and a few young tulip poplars. The orange leaves are on oaks. There is a mix of white oaks, scarlet oaks, black oaks, and chestnut oaks in that part of the forest. We have had two storms in the nearly 50 years that we've lived here that have done so much damage that we had to have logging done to make the woods safe for us and our dogs to enjoy. One was 8 years ago, and the second was this past March. This road was used both times to bring the logs out of the woods.

Over time water has eroded the sandstone into sinuous scalloped shapes in the Shawnee National Forest, in southern Illinois. There are ripples and reflections in the small pools.

This is one of the many waterfalls we visited. This waterfall is flowing through the largely maple and beech forest. It has a multi tiered cascaded before a 10-15 foot drop. Tree trunks and large limbs across and along the falls and stream are evidence of heavier flows.

Along the Fourth of July Creek in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, bright pink fireweed and other plants are taking advantage of sunlight and growing rapidly after a wild fire. They stand out in contrast to the blackened trunks of lodgepole pines.

The trees are showing a range of fall colors. The deep greens are mostly American beech and red and white oak trees. The yellows and yellow-greens are probably maples and some of beech trees too. The yellow and orange look like sassafras, and the deep maroons are probably dogwoods. Some of the tree trunks have gray-green lichen growing on them.

The sassafras tree is the only one that I know of that has leaves of more than one shape. In the center of the shot is the silhouette of a mitten shaped leaf. The sunshine is coming from behind these cattails. That backlighting sets the green leaves and the seed fluff aglow. This photo was taken in the fall of 2018 when the cattails were starting the next generation of these fresh water plants.
