A poem by Carol Ann Duffy: How it glitters and shines: The Grand Service, among the rocks and the rubble, laid out on a breezeblock horseshoe table, six crystal glasses per setting. It took eight servants three weeks to polish-silver coated in a thin layer of gold-even the concrete dust in the air seems glamourised And the ruins are decked in the uplifting flags of democracy. To start, fillet of Dover Sole filled with salmon mousse, served on a bed of leeks with white wine sauce. Poached Sandringham venison with truffles to follow. Then Key Lime Pie, and among the wines, Chateau Pinchon—Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, 1990. Yum-Yum. Let the trumpets sound on the bombsite as the great and the good pick their way through, and a famished child peers through a bullet-hole in a wall.

I could feed the LLM hours of detailed tape record­ings of inter­views con­duc­ted by me, inter­rog­at­ing vari­ous sub­jects, but it had no idea what really mattered — which moments truly illu­min­ated the inter­viewee’s inner life or chimed with some lar­ger nar­rat­ive point. As any good writer knows, some of the best mater­ial comes from a single, unex­pec­ted moment in these inter­ac­tions — when and how someone looks away dur­ing a ques­tion, or the sound of a laugh. Such moments don’t lend them­selves to pat­tern recog­ni­tion. But they can make non-fic­tion great. They are part of our felt exper­i­ence in the real world. That’s something that remains, for now at least, the pur­vey of humans.'

Two rights mak­ing something just slightly wrong. This is a good way to look at the moon jar, an object type that looms large in the story of Korean ceram­ics. Almost (but not quite) per­fectly round, they are made by throw­ing two large bowls, which are then joined together at the rims. The res­ult­ing sphere is set on a low, nar­row foot, the top is cut open and a rim is added. Finally, the whole thing is glazed and fired. The res­ult has an aus­tere beauty and a power­ful pres­ence. Though essen­tially geo­met­rical, a moon jar is almost always just a little irreg­u­lar along the seam where the two halves are joined, a bit wobbly around the middle. Most of us can sym­path­ise.The ori­gins of this tran­scend­ent yet oh-so-human shape are some­what obscure. Recent schol­ar­ship points to the early 17th cen­tury, fol­low­ing two dev­ast­at­ing inva­sions by the Japan­ese in the 1590s. These wars of aggres­sion involved mass deport­a­tions, with thou­sands of enslaved peas­ants and skilled artis­ans for­cibly brought to Kyushu. Accord­ing to Haely Chang, cur­ator at the Hood Museum of Art at Dart­mouth Uni­versity, the first moon jars were made in the wake of this con­flict, at a time when Korea had lost many of its best pot­ters: “The simple form, rel­at­ively straight­for­ward fab­ric­a­tion and unadorned mono­chrome glaze were suit­able within this con­text, espe­cially com­pared to the more ornate por­cel­ains of the early Chosŏn period.”
