I should say she was overall pretty awesome. That particular comment just struck me as highlighting the issues of survival vs. not having to worry about dinner and the perceptions that often go with that, even from intelligent, thoughtful people.

Had a prof in my working class state school once get frustrated that there were many students at the local wealthy school that worked on projects outside of class and how hard it was to get people to do the same at our school. But we we’re all running off to one of two or three jobs, etc.
