Journalist.

Absolutely prolific on social media.
It's theoretically independent but the government has to renew its charter every ten years so it's a bit of a grey area.

I'm not sure councillors in Hackney have a huge say on Middle Eastern geopolitics. I'd stick to bins.

You're unlikely to. If you're not a resident they can't act on your behalf.

I think they're using it in this case to mean "I found it mildly inconvenient".

The blue ones aren't mental.

Thank you for putting THE most horrific of images in my head

I mean, the most offensive thing was him trying to make "proud" and "ground" work as a rhyme. This is primary school level stuff.

You know in Game of Thrones when all those dead wildlings come back to life as baddies and they scale the walls of Hardhome where they absolutely fuck everything up and Jon Snow and his mates leg it in a boat? That's what it feels like when twitter shitposters discover this place.

So THAT'S the point of Chris Philp. I knew we'd get there eventually.

The underfunding of councils since 2010 has fuelled Reform's rise more than anything, and fixing that is probably how Labour goes about defeating them.

This was actually my main takeaway from reading the (excellent) Francis Wheen biography. He pissed away 90% of his working hours writing letters about whatever pointless quarrel he was involved in.

Should maybe have focused more on stacking up 'economics' and that sort of thing.

This is a wonderful piece of writing. Thank you.

Yeah, people contain multitudes, which I guess is one of the core themes of Origin Story.

Sad we may never get to hear Ian use the phrase "So then in 1971 Foucault was all '1v1 me bro'."

He's been remarkably 'fecund' - he's basically the Lana Del Rey of linguistic and political theory - and it would just take fucking months to do it properly.
October 1, 2025 at 8:43 AM
Well, I mean, he's sold a LOT of books!

He'd make a tremendous Origin Story btw but I would not envy the reading...

(Chomsky, obviously. Not Jim Jeffries.)
October 1, 2025 at 8:06 AM
I mean, Jim Jeffries has justified it on the grounds that US human rights abuses are just as bad which, essentially, has been Noam Chomsky's career for the last 50 years.

"Even to talk about politics in a public place, such as a pub, can lead to strangers grumpily asking you to talk about something else."

I bet it can, Andy. I bet it can...

Fairly sure it was Tony Benn who said "There are too many socialist parties and not enough socialists."
September 18, 2025 at 3:21 PM
It reminds me of sports journalists and their coverage of Jose Mourinho in his 'pomp'. They really overestimated how fascinating the general public found him.
September 12, 2025 at 10:23 AM
I would imagine that come the next election and the very real prospect of a Reform government people will vote tactically like never before and will probably get over their current problems with Labour

Has she also left the housing brief? She was exactly the right person to be leading that.
