Two weeks after getting back from vacation, my first commute north on a regular commute day. And my last, for a couple of weeks.

Soundtrack: the Brad Mehldau Trio playing Sam Rivers' gorgeous piece Beatrice, which should be much better known than it is. (@kingdomofaud.bsky.social - give this a try)

Couldn't resist. Bought a sweatshirt.

Somewhat more caffeinated than the pic of me and the boy an hour ago, as I set off on a rare downtown commute.

And look at the amazing pin I found at @thebookishtype.bsky.social in Leeds!

Soundtrack: U-Roy's fantastic dub version of Small Axe, one of my favorite Bob Marley songs.

Good morning! Happy boy, happy girl!

And it's back on the Purple Line and something close to normality after three very unusual weeks. A very Seattle autumn morning here in Chicago, 40s and light rain.

Soundtrack: Rhizomes, by the great beyond-category pianist Kris Davis.

I gave a talk "Gender 101" to a national conference of (mostly) cis women, which was really well-received. Six days later, I still have a "Jillian in front of an audience" high.

And in less trans-related news, my wife and I upgraded our status from happy lesbians to happy cat lesbians.

Lord Whittaker of Andersonville.

The "look at our beautiful new cat!" posts will tail off eventually. Perhaps.

What perfect album came out the year you turned 16?

STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND LOOK AT THIS SWEET BOY

This is Whittaker. We met him at the rescue today. He was looking for his people.

He's found them! We just brought him home (I cried). He's the best boy ever and now he has a forever home.

Vagiversary!

November 15 2022: in Spokane for the best Taco Tuesday ever.

Last day of the conference, and today I just get to sit in the audience and maybe ask the odd question.

My contribution to storytelling hour was fun, very queer, and went over well, I think.

And while I'm here - check out the amazing earrings @scarlettaddams.bsky.social bought for me!

Ready for Day 2 of Women in Statistics and Data Science.

Got my talk out of the way yesterday, time to relax, learn, and decide what I'm going to do for today's closing storytelling hour.
November 13, 2025 at 2:34 PM
A bit more dressed up than my usual work-from-home attire, for day 1 of the virtual conference.
November 12, 2025 at 2:58 PM
... and as we crossed the state line into Illinois, we saw this. Quite the welcome!

Snow commute!

Not the apocalyptic blizzard we were half-expecting, but a decent couple of inches in Andersonville. I'm not in Leeds any more!

Soundtrack: Delphine Nuptials, from the terrific Don Byron & Aruan Ortiz album a couple of years back.

Whaaaat?
November 9, 2025 at 9:13 PM
Back in Chicago in time for the first snow of the winter.

Just a few pretty but inconsequential flakes today. Tomorrow, though...
November 9, 2025 at 7:13 PM
I know I've been here less than two years. But it's long enough to learn the three little words of the Chicago girl coming home from her travels.

"Beef, wet, hot"

At the gate, boarding soon.

Despite my fears, survived almost two weeks in the UK with zero terfery.

Good times with family and friends, and some fun explorations. @scarlettaddams.bsky.social will get over her "narrow roads with 60mph speed limits and tractors" trauma eventually.

Back soon!
