Interestingly, using a survey of national #maize breeding programs in Eastern and Southern #Africa, we confirmed the continuing #gender gap in agricultural researchers.

After 10 wasted weeks, where simple tasks you take for granted completely broke me, it feels like maybe I’m slowly starting to get my life back. I’ve missed it.

We found an average of 2.9 leaves are removed during detasseling in commercial seed production fields.

This reduces maize seed yield by an estimated 14%. Deploying Ms44-SPT would avoid this seed loss and simplify hybrid seed production.

BNI #wheat has the potential to reduce #nitrogen use by 8 to 21% and reduce N2O emissions by 15 Mt CO2e (this is equivalent to the emissions of 30 million cars!)

5th Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI) Consortium meeting hosted by #JIRCAS

#BNI offers a genetic solution towards reducing #greenhousegas emissions by slowing down the conversion of ammonium to nitrate in the soil and providing a more sustained source of available #nitrogen to plants

Trying to understand how farmers might adapt technologies can provide insights of how social considerations can be incorporated into field testing strategies of new technologies.
November 18, 2024 at 3:45 PM
Gender differences in technology use are often associated with gender-linked differences in key variables (education, farm size, assets etc.)

Our study reinforces the need to move away from homogenous comparisons of women and men and include household characteristics that interact with gender.

Understanding the performance of new genetic technologies within farmers' real-world realities, is often overlooked but it is essential to ensure equitable benefits.

💫New method to incorporate smallholder farmers into early stage testing using sparse testing.

We outline a new method using genomic relationships to incorporate the inclusion of resource poor maize farmers into the early stages of maize breeding.
