Post-doc at UIUC studying stomatal patterning. Botanist by training with interests broadly in evo-devo, mechanistic modeling, and genetics, particularly in relation to grasses and cereals. Opinions my own.
October sucked pretty epically but trying to put my best foot forward for November and finally bought myself a dedicated mini fridge for my diverse seed collections (reclaiming kitchen fridge shelf space). Will this also double as a beer fridge given that its also in my wood shop? Time will tell…

Someone else in the histology lab is taking the poofy brush game to the next level, my paltry implements I brought along on the left for scale.

Ordered ProbeOn Plus slides for in situs and instead received these, the catalog numbers seem to match at least… Don’t suppose any histo-folks have also noticed this name change recently? Did ProbeOn’s just get rebranded or something?

WHAT, this is the first time I’ve ever just seen these in the market, usually I have to fight the squirrels for a paw paw or two each season!

The white snakeroot in the biodiversity garden has decreed that fall vibes are officially here on the plains

@kheyduk.bsky.social good example of bulliform cells in action to aid in grass leaf rolling

As @kheyduk.bsky.social had promised, doing assays that involve watching water boil turn out to not be the most exciting activities.

It begins!!! Just got the first HCR package for doing Sorghum in situs in due time. I don’t see him on here anymore but kudos to Sam Leiboff for pointing me on this direction months ago, was prepared to make my life way more difficult than it needed to be for this experiment.

If you’re splitting for kindling I remember Oklahoma friends with wood burning stoves who used variants of these kindling splitters. Makes for quick work with just a small rock hammer.

Update: waste not, want not.

Sweet corn from the farmers market today came complete with some huitlacoche. I feel like this gift is wasted on the likes of me though, I have no idea how to prepare it…

Two yard orb weavers and counting presently. The female picked a good spot in the tomatillos (collecting them for chili verde is gonna be a delicate operation now), the male however was just lazy and posted up at my front door. Should I relocate this guy or embrace the Halloween decor early?

Today’s hike was, exfoliating, to say the least this afternoon. Now I know what @pub.nws-bot.us was on about with derechos in Pueblo last night.

Love this place so much. Great Sand Dunes is the best National Park imho.

Found a place to crash for a bit in Colorado this evening only to have a raven show up soon after. The nesting birds couldn’t care less if I exist but they’re making sure the raven knows he’s not welcome.

Thought I was just seeing a really weird Gambel oak yesterday but it turns out this might be Q. welshii instead (new one for the personal plant list)! @andrewlhipp.bsky.social I was trying to dig around and find its conservation status since since near as I can tell this is a habitat specialist?

@roseamarks.bsky.social the forbidden climbing wall?

I didn’t even realize individual solar panels could get that big. (📸 @ Bryce Canyon NP)

One great example from earlier (just ignore the colorful collared lizard sunning himself): that lower log fragment has a knot! We’re literally looking at a fossilized axillary branch and the wood grain is curving around it exactly like you might expect in modern trees!

After thinking very deeply about how land plants have put their body plan together through evolution at Botany I don’t think I could have possibly stumbled onto a better National Park than Petrified Forest. This place is a delight!

Having trouble finding these in the Arizona field guides for some reason…

I was informed by LA friends in Urbana that I would be tried in the Hague if this didn’t happen while I was out this way. Solid breakfast burritos w/ a bit of verde!
