I recall my first business meeting in China in the mid 90’s before the boom. There was a government official in full military uniform including hat at the conference table. As years progressed the gov’t guys were still embedded in businesses but toned it down with normal bizz attire.

As someone that’s spent a considerable amount of time working solo in strange far away places it hits home. There is a bit of an indescribable emptiness as one navigates such places alone after hours.

I remember sitting at a table with the legendary rhythm guitarist Freddie Green and another guy called Count Basie one night between sets in about 1980. I recall them talking about having to sleep on pool tables and work for food and gas money for the buss during the Great Depression.
