Anyone who asks why Obama didn't do more with the supermajority needs to remember that Obama had to deal with eight or nine Joe Manchins in the caucus, Baucus being among the most Manchiniest of them all.

All McConnell knew how to do was appoint judges and say “no.” He never passed a major piece of legislation.

The question is whether or not Mamdani will be effective as Mayor in implementing the changes he promises. Only then can we assess whether or not he’s a model for the future or a local phenomenon.

It still feels to me like he's taking a larger problem - police brutality - and blaming it on something that only a very small percentage of police departments actually do.

The one thing he's said that I do think is tinged with antisemitism is when he said in 2023 "when the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it's been laced by the IDF."

He still uses that acronym. I think someone made fun of him for laughing too loud as a kid and he turned that humiliation into a principle, because he almost never laughs out loud and considers it gauche if you do so in public.
