PhD candidate in economics at UC Davis. I am interested in electricity transmission and distribution, energy storage, and the economics of electricity market policies. Energy&environmental econ, economic history, applied microeconomics.
Looks very cool from Stanford energy today on the utilization of the transmission network in the US west! Interesting to see that large power transformers are more 'used up' to their limits than many transmission lines! Congested transformers are becoming normal! energy.stanford.edu/news/hidden-...
The hidden transmission capacity of the American West
Stanford researchers have identified significant areas of North America’s western electricity grid that are underutilized and good places to build data centers and new generators. Next, they recommend...

Jessica Lyu's review of Columbia River Power For the People
5/5: I read the entire book twice, it's a good one. It was written in 1980 when BPA was 43 years old, and documents a great length of details behind each of the agency's achievements since it was born...

How much land can be kept or turned into public land? How many resources can be devoted to protecting private property at the expense of potential loss of public property? Have never thought about these issues in a beachfront setting before! An interesting article.

Does going rooftop solar produce a cost shift or save money for everybody? The answer is, yes there is a cost shift, and yes IF the cost saved from buying less electricity from the grid is higher than the costs saved from not going rooftop solar.

Every Electricity Demand Reduction is a Cost Shift
That’s not an ethical judgment, just simple math.  Over the years, our team of bloggers has put out quite a few posts on rooftop solar, many of which discuss the cost shift from solar ad…

Does the utility who owns the coal plant decides who should pay for the costs? Or, should all market participants come together to decide a solution that speaks better for the entire market? Since coal plants are likely not cleared around the clock, what would an out-of-market solution look like?
Who should pay to keep Michigan coal plant running past its retirement date?
Groups told federal regulators that making MISO customers pay for a power plant that does not benefit them would violate the Federal Power Act’s cost causation requirement.

Curious to see where this is going, and how big the cost shift can be, which is going to be determined by MN utilities' current retail rates and their rooftop solar compensation rules. Meredith's blog is a must read!! (energyathaas.wordpress.com/2023/04/17/w...)

Minnesota bill could 'all but stop' rural small-scale solar installs
The legislation, which has enthusiastic support from rural electric cooperatives, would slash bill credits for future solar customers in much of the state.
