Yet Jesus's first followers considered his rejection of violence important enough to what Jesus taught them and the example he left them that it became a nonnegotiable part of their lived identity; part of what they understood discipleship to entail, what defined their allegiance to Jesus as Lord.

Jesus came into this world announcing deliverance and stirring hope, yet rejecting violence and exhorting all to follow his example.

Sadly, there is certainly no less (and likely a lot more) violence in the world today than there was a year ago. I am more convinced than ever that the church needs to respond with obedience to Jesus’s call to be peace-makers, faithfully following our Prince of Peace.
