Jesus's nonviolence was, for many, surprising—often disappointingly so. It challenged expectations and raised questions about his legitimacy.

Violence and power were inextricable from one another in the first-century world dominated by the Roman Empire. Violence and hope were interwoven with one another in the minds of many who longed for God's deliverance.

“Love is God’s character, but God’s robust multidimensional peace is God’s cosmic and personal mission.”

Love this from Ken Esau at the MB Equip Conference.

Jesus-centred nonviolence and peacemaking is not one-size-fits-all; it requires creativity, and its embodiment is situational. We must fix our eyes on Jesus, “the pioneer and perfecter of faith,” and—by God’s grace and the wisdom of the Spirit—practice embodied allegiance.

Violence and death are among the “powers and authorities” that God “triumphed over” on the cross of Jesus (Col. 2:13–15). The damage they continue to do, the impact these demonic powers have on people, must not set the terms of Christian engagement with the world. Jesus does.

If Jesus is truly Lord, and therefore is owed my allegiance; if Jesus’s word is truth, and therefore is owed my obedience; if Jesus is the author and perfecter of faith, and therefore is owed my imitation, then quite literally everything else must be secondary.

Violence is antithetical to the identity and mission of Christians as they follow, obey, serve, and worship Jesus their Lord, the Prince of Peace.

I really enjoyed this conversation about the challenge and hope of following Jesus’s call to be peacemakers. I’m grateful for every chance I have to talk about this topic, especially as violence continues to wreak its destructive, evil work all around us. The world needs the shalom-peace of Jesus!

Peace is not “a preference for Christians,” but “the necessity, the prophetic burden.”
