Only in my teens I asked her what it meant and to my surprise she said it means “cockroaches”.

The etymology of “scarabocchio” (scribble) and “scarafaggio” (roach) show that the former may actually come from the latter.

I’ve only just noticed that in the imperative mood the subject clitic is only necessary for the third person (sg and pl). I wonder why!
