Author of Relax Baby Be Cool: the Artistry and Audacity of Serge Gainsbourg - out now on Jawbone Press
#nowplaying Couldn't find this wonderful record when I was in France recently but I've managed to get hold of a reasonably priced one from Japan. Thanks Japan!

Popped along to the V&A East storehouse for a rummage through Bowie's stuff. Most jarring was the Who Inspires You? section where patrons are invited to answer the question and some numbnuts scrawled down "Weller & Farage".

The heroic Roddy Bottum and me looking like the poster from Straw Dogs, after a fine natter at Resident Music in Brighton. His often eye-popping memoir The Royal We is out via Jawbone Nov 7

A Companion for the Spaces Between Dreams by Jamie Lidell and Luke Schneider is definitely one of my AOTY, and maybe one of the best ambient albums I've listened to in about five years #nowplaying

Good to see a new film about an art heist. Such a rarity these days.

Duolingo's video call feature with a teenage girl is extremely weird. The AI Lily just terminated the conversation because I said I liked concerts. I looked at the transcript afterwards and it picked up "J'aime les cons" or I like dicks 🤦

It's National Album Day and I don't know what that means! But just in case, here's me holding up Peter Hammill's rollicking Fool's Mate as my 8yo son takes a wonky photograph

I'm a massive fan of Brigitte Fontaine but had somehow not got around to Pick-Up, a mesmerising 2022 collaboration with The Limiñanas which Andrew's excellent article alerted me to. Favourite track so far is Sac d'os which is oddly redolent of latter-day The Fall

Drinking nonalcoholic libations to the ancestors as my mum would have been 80. It's mad to think what someone who could feasibly still be here and who never heard of the internet would be up to. I suppose it's a blessing in some ways that she never had the chance to become radicalised by Facebook.

Has a predominantly English speaking person ever nailed the French for squirrel and, conversely, has a French person ever said the English word squirrel with any success? Vive la différance...

#nowplaying £15 from Olaf's in Sevenoaks and now lighting up my Sunday afternoon with weirdy psychedelia. Aren't records bloody ace?

These must be contenders

I'll be going man on man with Roddy Bottum at Resident Records in Brighton on November 1st. His memoir is fantastic so far (I'm half way through) and anyone who knows me knows how much I love FNM, so it's fair to say I'm looking forward to it dice.fm/event/7dlmvv...

Oh, I just learned Véronique Vincent of Aksak Maboul and the Honeymoon Killers has died. Apparently the only Belgian to ever grace the cover of NME (not sure if they'd true but it's possible). Commiserations to Marc Hollander and the whole Crammed family. What sad news.

Everyone goes on about The Face but it was Sky magazine that helped shape my worldview as an impressionable late adolescent. It's funny how magazines die and then everyone forgets about them, but Sky was the slightly older, cooler, metropolitan friend that I needed living in a small town.
