That seems valid to me, even if Israel’s response is wildly disproportionate and inhumane. October 7th was a clear provocation. Both can be true. Acknowledging there’s also a historical context and foundation here that’s not irrelevant.

Though, I suspect, the association of such rhetoric with Trump has just made it less fashionable to talk about on the Left, while making it more palatable in what was not long ago still referred to as the “Party of Free Trade”.

If there’s a silver lining: It seems the protectionist faction of the Left peaked during Bernie Sander’s primary campaign, and perhaps Trump’s blatant mercantilism has inoculated the Left from such zero sum thinking.
