Why care? By understanding neutron stars, we can better interpret the signals these stars send out (like radio waves) and improve our understanding of how matter behaves under extreme conditions. (4/4)

This is an illustration of the different phases of "nuclear pasta," theoretical structures formed by matter in neutron stars under extreme pressure and density. Each labeled panel represents a unique configuration of protons and neutrons: (a) Gnocchi: Small, round clusters resembling gnocchi pasta. (b) Spaghetti: Long, cylindrical strands similar to spaghetti. (c) Waffles: A grid-like structure with voids resembling a waffle texture. (d) Lasagna: Flat, layered sheets resembling lasagna noodles. (e) Defects: Irregularities or disruptions in the otherwise ordered nuclear structures. (f) Antispaghetti: Hollow cylindrical tubes that are the inverse of spaghetti. (g) Antignocchi: Void-like structures that are the inverse of gnocchi clusters. These configurations demonstrate the complex behavior of nuclear matter under the immense forces inside neutron stars.
