OTD in 1715 the battle of Sheriffmuir was fought between the government army led by Argyll against the Jacobites led by the somewhat ineffectual Mar. Both sides claimed victory.

Yesterday I went to Cleeve Abbey which was lovely but my favourite bit was the fabulously named Cleeva Clapp who used to tell visitors in the 1870s ghost stories about the monks.

OTD in history in 1547, the battle of Pinkie Cleugh was fought. It was part of the English crown's attempt to persuade the Scots to marry Mary , Queen of Scots to Edward. England was victorious on the day but the Franco-Scottish alliance was strengthened.

Ah well you will love this suit Sir John Hynde Cotton (1686 – 1752). Sir John was an English Tory MP and a Jacobite. He got this in Edinburgh 1744. Although it did have to be enlarged as he was a big man.
