Next read for the spring semester is Beta Vulgaris by Margie Sarsfield

I’m so excited for this one. Fully down for some bloody beets and lustful vegetal horror 🩸🖤🩸

From StorySouth:

"Don’t Be Afraid" by Lauren Watel

Closing out #58 with our longest short story of the issue. I love how sensitively Watel renders the complicated aftermath of new parenthood, all its tenderness and trouble.

From @storysouth.bsky.social Issue 58:

"Lorenzo" by Ryan O'Toole

This one's a hard-hitter. Told in a clean, unadorned voice, this story recounts the breakdown of a tender adolescent companionship, with devastating results.

From @storysouth.bsky.social Issue 58:

Everywhere, North by Avalon Felice Lee

A fragmented narrative about an Asian American’s experience serving in Vietnam. Searing in its language, wildly untethered in its representation of time -- yeah, this one floored me.

Next novel of the year has been on my reading list for ages though I'm not sure why it’s taken me so long to get to it. 60 pages in and already I'm so happy to come back to Erdrich's nourishing insights years after reading The Night Watchman ❤️❤️

TFW you reread Parable of the Sower to teach your sf class and realize it happened last year #octaviabutler #dystopia #scifiprophet

So much negativity, doom, and gloom… if you see this comment or repost with a pic of food and a meme.

Veggie dumplings from the Buford Hwy International Market + my favorite meme cat (godspeed Jinx, wherever you are 🥲)

Features an excerpt from @najpullen.bsky.social’s The Black Hunger, which also sounds like a yes please sir for me. All the books coming out through Orbit’s new horror imprint this year are going to be 🔥 🔥 🔥

I know all new books smell good but these books smell REALLY good, like edible-good. I could eat these books. For the smell alone you should buy a copy ❤️ 🐇

So saddened to hear about David Lynch, an artist in the truest sense and a well of creativity and passion. His films (and Twin Peaks ♥️) encouraged me to embrace my inner strange, and to keep my heart open to strangeness in the world and in others. Mr. Lynch, you’re like no other. You’ll be missed.

Next read of the year: The Book of Love by Kelly Link. Magic for Beginners was a formative collection in my journey as a writer, going all the way back to undergrad.

Reading Link’s work is like coming home 🥰💖💗❤️
