The first is the microscopic gametophyte phase where they are either male or female and then develop eggs or sperm. Once the egg is fertilized, it grows into a sporophyte, which is the structure we typically associate with kelp.

I dove in my first bull kelp forest this summer while doing @reefcheckfoundation trainings. Since then, I’ve dove in more kelp and I’m obsessed with it 🤩

Did you know that kelp has two life cycles?

I finally found my nudibranch white whale; the clown dorid! More specifically, a modest clown dorid. After a year of searching, I finally saw several of these dorids during the low tides last week.

These guys were probably about 3 inches (7.6cm) long but can get up to ~6 inches (15 cm).

Itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot branched dendronotid on the dock today! This is my first time seeing one with this coloration. Typically the ones I find are brown and resemble the algae on the docks.

Tufted puffins in Cannon Beach and in the San Juan Islands. These guys have spent the last 8 months floating out at sea and have come back to nest. They dig burrows which can be up to 7 ft deep. It was awesome to see these little guys fly around and forage!

Stalked jellyfish

They live similarly to the polyp phase of other jellyfish, attaching themselves to a surface and using their tentacles to catch plankton.
