I guess that's what I miss. We talk about 'how do I make friends as I get older' and I can still keenly remember doing that at a distance by simply sharing. Not in competition with an algorithm... but because people found each other and got to know each other through journals.

But that's just a convenient side benefit. The real thing that's missing is the sense of self reflection and the ability to do it in a community. I made many true friends there. I learned a lot about myself and the lived experiences of others. It wasn't clickbait or anger farming.
