What can Belem do? The EU might announce it's NDC.
There is nothing on the negotiating agendas related to closing this gap.

ENB will have a what to expect video. The formal agendas will show how little there is in the interstate process.

I'd say it is far worse than before Paris. COPs are so much bigger, and the Paris Agreement fundamentally altered the role of the UNFCCC.
These MegaCOPs set expectations that the UNFCCC cannot meet. The Paris Agreement sets decision-making at the national level, but many still focus on the global.

I have enormous respect for those who have been fighting the good fight for years on end. 12 years burned me out.
Good luck to everyone in Belem. May you be safe in your "love hotel" and find some hope in the venue.

5. Little traction for good ideas. There are options that could help. Take finance:
- reduce fossil fuel subsidies
- a frequent flyer tax
- debt forgiveness
They just don't get a look in because, well repetition.

4. World Leaders' Summit (see point 1). Leaders have no role, unless they want to explain why they are not implementing their NDCs.
But they take up everyone's time and attention, and cause a security mess.

3. The size - what are 60,000 people doing there? The negotiations will be focused on a few implementation issues & stalemated issues.
Are the other 52,000 people there for speeches and panels? How does that help the climate?

2. Repetition: It's the same fights over and over. Sometimes in new forms, with new terms. But the same discussions that increasingly are divorced from realities on the ground.

Can your map look at communities? Facility sites are correlated with racialized and poorer communities in the US and Canada. There's less evidence in the UK though.

PM 2.5 pollution contributes to 4.9million deaths a year globally. You can filter our Watershed Pollution Map to show PM 2.5 emissions in UK + it's clear petrol vehicles, oil rigs, wood burners + shipping are making big contributions to this type of pollution.

I get the optics, but leader's dont really do much at COPs. I've been to 11 COPs. Most of the effective ones didn't have a Summit.
