I have a small fruit farm and learned the hard way that paying people even a basic living wage and not working them too hard... there was no way we could break even. We shuttered the fruit business. (Now we run it as a nonprofit with volunteers, and give the fruit away to community. Much better.)

The Center for Farmworker Families in California says that early death among farmworks is uncounted but quite high. I don't know their source but they mentioned an average life expectancy of 43 years among CA farmworkers
